Withdrawals Are In Style
Yesterday 2 players on our New York Mets withdrew from the World Baseball Classic. Billy Wagner and Pedro Martinez both decided that the Mets and the 06' season are just a tad bit more important than the WBC. They may not have said it in so many words but by pulling themselves out of this competition they defiantly made that point clear. Wagner was set to pitch for the American team. According to The Journal News, Wagner is not physically ready to represent the U.S. "I put a lot of thought into it," Wagner said Wednesday morning. "I want to be comfortable with my new teammates and surroundings. Every player wants to play for his country, but I have to be concerned with what is best for me. ... Right now, I'm not in shape to help the U.S. team." Pedro was set to pitch for the Dominican Republic. According to ESPN, Pedro is dropping out due to his toe injury. Pedro is not 100% and may not be until the season starts. He knows that the upcoming season is his job and that is what he must focus on. "I met with Pedro to talk about this; he did everything he could, and he was ready to join the team later in the competition," said Manny Acta, manager of the Dominican national team and Mets 3B coach. "Not being able to don the national colors makes him very sad." In my personal view the WBC is good for baseball. It will showcase hidtalentlent from all over the world. However when it comes to Pedro and Wagner, who are two of the biggest stars on this Mets team, I think it is better for the both of them to stay out of the classic, and focus on what is more important (the Mets). |
