Today was opening day at Shea Stadium and the Mets and Tommy Glavine took on the Washington Nationals and Livan Hernandez. Newcomers Paul LoDuca, Xavier Nady and Billy Wagner performed well as did Tommy, David Wright, and the entire Met defense in a 3-2 victory.
Glavine allowed 1 run over 6 innings. He walked 2 and struck out 5 while allowing 6 hits. David Wright hit a solo jack, which was the deciding run of the game. Xavier Nady went 4 for 4 with 2 doubles a run and an RBI. Paul LoDuca went 2-4 with 1 RBI and also made the deciding play of the game with some help from Cliff Floyd and Jose Reyes.
On a double hit to the left field corner Alfonso Soriano tried to score the tying run from first but Floyd made a great throw to Reyes who gunned Soriano down at the plate, or that was the call... In all actuality LoDuca dropped the ball but sold it to the umpire as if he made a clean tag and the umpire bought it. Billy Wagner came on to save a one run game in the ninth and unlike the former closer of the Mets, Billy got the job done, with the assist of Beltran's arm as Carlos gunned Jose Vidro out at second for the final out of the game. After the game when asked about his thoughts on the play LoDuca said that he was a "magician." |
