Morning Papers

Some good stuff today, recaps of yesterday's games, updates on Carlos Delgado's elbow and Pedro's progress,World Baseball Classic news. There are two articles that I posted from yesterday, the first on possible trades for Victor Diaz, and the second seems a little intresting, the possible trade of either Tike Redman or Endy Chaves to the Marlins for left handed pitching prospect Scott Olsen. The Marlins first choice would be Joey Gathwright from Tampa Bay, but if a deal can't be reached the Mets might have a shot at getting a top level prospect for their excess outfielders.

From Mets' Perspective, Classic Is a Glass Half Full
March 6
New York Times (registration required): "Carlos Delgado revealed before Puerto Rico's 6-1 victory against the Mets on Sunday afternoon that tendinitis in his left elbow may limit his participation in the World Baseball Classic, no doubt giving the Mets — Delgado's other team — some pause before he left after the game for San Juan, the site of Puerto Rico's Pool C games."

Elbow Room
March 6
New York Post (registration required): "Delgado is experiencing left elbow tendinitis, an injury that kept him out of yesterday's exhibition game pitting the Mets against Puerto Rico's World Baseball Classic team. Delgado would have played for Puerto Rico had he been healthy."

Omar says Pedro will be all right
March 6
New York Daily News: "GM Omar Minaya echoed Pedro Martinez's confidence that the ace would be ready for Opening Day. Still, a team insider advised paying close attention to next Monday. "

Beltran Smokes Wagner
March 6
New York Post (registration required): "It was Mets closer versus Mets center fielder yesterday, as Billy Wagner faced Carlos Beltran in the Mets' exhibition game against the World Baseball Classic team from Puerto Rico."

Pelfrey shows stuff that made him No. 1
March 6
Newark Star-Ledger (registration required): "The Mets got a glimpse of their future yesterday and, after seeing Mike Pelfrey pitch against big-league hitters for the first time, it can't get here soon enough."

Mets vs Mets & interest is flagging
March 6
New York Daily News columnist Bill Madden: "For starters yesterday, it was hard to tell which was the home team - and not just because seven of the 30 players on the Puerto Rican roster happen to be Mets, including heart-of-the-order sluggers Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado, who, combined, will take in about $27 million of Fred Wilpon's money this year."

Diaz may be dealt
March 5
Newsday (scroll down): "Look for the loser of the rightfield battle - Xavier Nady or Victor Diaz - to be dealt. If it's Diaz, the Angels or Orioles could be possibilities."

Olsen may be trade bait for center fielder
March 5
South Florida Sun-Sentinel: "The trade rumor that made the rounds earlier this winter involving Scott Olsen and Tampa Bay outfielder Joey Gathright shouldn't be totally discarded yet... Gathright is among several outfielders the Marlins would consider. Others who may be available: Jeremy Reed, Endy Chavez, Freddy Guzman, Luis Terrero, Tike Redman and Willy Taveras."
