Jeremi Gonzalez To Start

The Mets will opt to go with Jose Lima and Jeremy Gonzalez on Friday and Saturday to replace Brian Bannister and Victor Zambrano. Lima will go on Friday and hopes that his new hairstyle will help him pitch better. The story however is Jeremi Gonzalez.

Gonzalez is a young kid with some up side. Here is the scouting report on
Mets.com:

"Until the fourth week of Spring Training brought the emergence of Brian Bannister and Darren Oliver, Gonzalez appeared to have a good chance of beginning the season on the big-league roster. Now the injuries to Bannister and Victor Zambrano have afforded him a chance to make his 12th big league start in three seasons -- three with the Red Sox last year and eight with the Devil Rays in 2004. He had a 1-2 record and 3.03 ERA in six starts with the Mets' Triple-A Norfolk affiliate. He allowed 34 base runners and struck out 20."

Brian Bannister will return in about a week or two. The Mets will stick it out with these two guys until then. Whoever does the best job will likely get to stay when Bannister returns. When John Maine returns from the DL he will likely compete with whoever is still around for the fifth starter's role. Sooner or later, the Mets will have to make a move to get a better starter in there. Weather that move will be to move Heilman to the rotation or to make a trade only time will tell...For now all I can say is LETS GO METS!!!
