Mets Win A Wild One

The Mets faced the Diamondbacks in the opener of a three game set at Shea. The game was delayed twice before the third inning as both teams kept coming from behind. In the second inning the Mets scored 4 runs to overcome a one run deficit. In the fourth Trachsel gave up 2 runs and then gave up another run in the fifth to tie the game. The run in the fifth came off of a solo HR by Eric Byrnes (his second of the night). In the sixth inning the Mets took the lead as Cliff Floyd and Jose Valentin both hit solo HRs. In the very next inning Chad Tracy hit a three run shot off of Aaron Heilman to propel the D'Backs ahead of the Mets. In the bottom of the ninth Endy Chavez came in for Xavier Nady in the double switch. He led off with a double. After failing to bunt Chavez over to third, Jose Reyes followed with a line drive single to score the tieing run. LoDuca delivered his fourth hit of the night to move Reyes over to third. The D'Backs intentionally walked Carlos Beltran to face the slumping Carlos Delgado, and it paid off as Delgado struck out. David Wright then delivered the game-winning hit with the bases loaded, his third walk off hit this season at Shea.

As for Met pitching the only bright spot was Duaner Sanchez. Steve Trachsel pitched 6 innings allowing 7 hits and 4 runs including 2 HRs. Aaron Heilman pitched 2 innings giving up the three run HR in his first inning but then bounced back well in his second inning. And Sanchez had a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Sanchez got the win and Jose Valverde suffered his second blown save in two nights. The Mets will take some rest and come back tonight to face the D'Backs in game two. Alay Soler will take the mound for the Mets against Miguel Batista.
